I went back and forth on posting this. Why? In all honesty, Jaclyn Hill has been… in a weird place lately. In fact, I find myself nearly cringing at a majority of the stuff she’s been posting online. And, this is not the first time it’s been difficult to be a Jaclyn Hill fan (see: Lipstick Gate).
I have been following Jaclyn for years — she’s actually the first YouTuber I’ve ever followed, and she taught me how to contour via her video tutorials! For so long, I loved everything she posted and I thought she was so funny.
But, she’s had ups and downs (like all of us do), but wow she handles the downs ROUGH. I’m not sure what’s happening with her currently, but she’s had a strange run posting about possibly being abducted (no details were shared), then her boyfriend was very sick (he seems better now), and she hinted at a new business venture (but never followed up with details).
But before this bout of strange behavior, she released a line of blushes and lip products that made me so happy for her. That’s why I wanted to share what I bought!
Enter: the Bougie Rouge Collection.
The promos she put out for this collection were so creative — like a modern glam version of Marie Antoinette — sky blues and all the rouge colors. Lots of diamonds. It was so neat! Then, she put out a video explaining how she came up with the concept, and it really was a true passion project.
Honestly, watching her explain this concept and show the products was the first time I felt like Jaclyn was back after two full years of ups and downs. I was really happy to see her back to herself and I wanted to support this line!
So, I bought three products. I bought one of each product from the collection, minus one of the blush palettes because I currently have at least five (!) blush palettes in my bathroom and I have to draw the line somewhere. Here’s what I got:
Mood Light Luminous Rouge
The Mood Light loose powder is something Jaclyn released with her highlight collection. It’s supposed to provide more of a “glow from within” look as opposed to a blinding highlight. So for this collection, she combined blush with the Mood Light powder for a glow blush, which I thought was a cool idea.
I got the color “Love Language” (described as a bright sienna on the website) — I was trying to get a color I didn’t already have. Generally speaking, this is a good product. However, it’s really not luminous. It does have a slight sheen to it, but nothing crazy.
I think the loose blush idea is neat, but is it necessary? TBD. I do think this would make a nice setting powder for a cream blush. I also like the color I got and think it will be good for year ’round wear.
Rouge Romance Lip Cushion
I originally wasn’t planning on getting a lip product (I have too many) but I loved the color Jaclyn was wearing in the product reveal video, so I bought it: the color is called “Promised.” It’s described as a plummy pink online and that’s the perfect way of saying it, and it’s so pretty. It’s about one shade off my natural lip color, which I love!
The lip cushion is not a gloss or an oil or a cream… it’s like a soft matte, almost a suede finish. It doesn’t dry out, but looks natural on. I really like this product!
Rouge Romance Cream Blush Stick
This was the product I was most excited to get! Yes, it’s a cream blush stick, but it looked verrryyyy pigmented and Jaclyn explained that it was unlike any other formula in that it dried to a powder. This is key because no one wants the cream blush to ruin their base — this is why I’ve struggled with cream blushes!
So, I got the color “Overruled” which is a deep rose hue — figured it would be great for fall and winter. I am still playing around with this one just to see all the different ways I can use it, but so far I like it. I have applied it directly on my skin right on top of my foundation and it looks great and blends easily.
But, when I watched a video from Manny MUA, he preferred to apply it with a beauty sponge. I love the color of it, and it’s so rich in color, it takes very little to look great. I also love the matte gold packaging.
