In college, I went to a spa (!) to get my eyebrows waxed regularly. Thinking back on that now, I have no idea how I was mentally justifying that expense as I had absolutely no money.
Even now, having a salaried job, I haven’t gotten my eyebrows professionally tended to in 10+ years… probably since college!
For years, I’ve managed to keep my eyebrows in check using tweezers, eyebrow scissors, and a spoolie (this Tweezerman kit has lasted me forever).
I brush my brows straight up and trim them to the length I like. I can eyeball it now, but I use the front of my brows (near my nose) as a guide.
I like wearing my brows gelled or fluffed up daily, so I don’t want them too long (this is my favorite gel to use).
I tweeze anything between my brows or underneath, and they’re good to go; a savings of $30 (that’s what I paid in college, no idea what the going rate is now… $100? ha!).
This routine (probably every 5-6 weeks) keeps them in check, but this winter, I decided to try coloring my own brows at home using men’s facial hair dye.
The box was around $12, and it’s plenty of color to last several eyebrow colorings! I’ve done it, I think, five times and still have plenty leftover; the bottles all have caps, so it’s easy to store and use again.
I chose a color that was 1-2 shades darker than my hair color; my eyebrows are a little light and dying them darker means I don’t need to fill them in (or at least, as much) when I do my makeup.
Even if I’m not wearing makeup, I like to throw on some brow gel to keep my brows in place. The brows give the face structure, and I think it helps me look put together, even when I’m not.
Anyway, obviously you just follow the instructions for the dye (I use roughly a pea-size amount of dye + developer, mix and apply). The first time I did it, I rinsed the dye off at the minimum time mark, I think around five minutes, but now I know seven minutes is my sweet spot!
I use a dual-ended spoolie to apply the dye (these are disposable, but I rinse and reuse the same one) generously throughout each brow. I use micellar water to remove any color that gets on my skin.
Once the time is up, I wash the color off with face wash, and ta-da, an at-home dye job! Google tells me an eyebrow tint can be anywhere from $20-$65… sooo, this is definitely great for the budget!
