Blanche’s Book Club: ‘One Life.’

I am still listening to audiobooks as a way to keep up with my reading goal while also getting other things done! I actually finished this latest one while doing tasks at my retail job (before the store opened).

I do better with memoirs and other non-fiction when it comes to audiobooks, and this last one was on my TBR list for awhile: “One Life” by Megan Rapinoe.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much about Megan Rapinoe before reading this book. I knew she was a star professional soccer player on the US team.

Of course, after listening to the book, I understand there is so much more to Megan.

The book covers her family and childhood (which also includes drug addiction), how she publicly came out and used her platform to support marriage equality, her personal relationships, and her career.

The memoir also talks a lot about Rapinoe’s decision to kneel during the National Anthem in 2016 — the first high-profile white athlete to do so — and the backlash that came from it.

There is also a play-by-play of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, along with loads of details about her part in suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination and equal pay.

This book was so inspiring!

As a white person, I don’t recommend we learn about institutional racism from other white people (it’s a conversation for another day, but I’m also not suggesting it’s the role of POC to educate us).

However, I really appreciated hearing Megan’s stance on it and why she decided to use her platform to bring attention to police brutality. She’s open about who supported her, and how it affected her career, which was interesting to hear.

This was an easy, fast read, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re interested in any of the topics mentioned above!
