Hi all! I hope you’re having a great week… I’m excited to share my latest audiobook adventure, “Cultish” by Amanda Montell.
This book explores cults, but more specifically the language that gets people hooked — fascinating! The book covers:
- What makes “cults” so intriguing?
- What makes them powerful?
- Could it happen to me?
- In positive ways and shadowy ones, cultish language is something we hear—and are influenced by—every single day.
The book covers popular cults we’ve heard about like Heaven’s Gate and Jonestown, along with religious cults such as scientology, but also MLMs and fitness groups.
This book took a little while for me to get into, but once I did — it was fantastic! I really enjoyed hearing about the different cults and thinking about things from the perspective of the language used.
Montell has another book that came out in 2019, “Wordslut” which uncovers language that oppresses marginalized groups. I definitely am adding that to my list!
Have you read any books on cults?
