Blanche’s Book Club: ‘The Summer Affair.’

Last night, I went to a free concert not too far from where I live. I went to these same concerts when I moved to Buffalo last summer, and I can specifically recall one night when the weather turned chilly and didn’t feel so much like summer.

Last night, it started to feel like that. Although Buffalonians really do make the most of these warmer seasons, this one has felt incredibly short.

I’m trying to hang on to every bit of it, including reading summery books from my seasonal reading stack (you can see all the titles here).

My most recent read is “A Summer Affair” by Elin Hilderbrand.

This book follows Claire Crispin, a mother and glass artist who begins an affair with Lock Dixon while they work together on an annual charity gala in Nantucket.

Claire and Lock are both married, so they try to keep their romance a secret, but it ripples through their families and the community.

Another layer of complication is added when the charity committee wants Claire to come out of retirement and create a blown-glass piece for the auction, and reach out to her rockstar ex-boyfriend to perform at the event.

I’ve read several of Elin Hilderbrand’s books, and this one was a little spicy! I liked that it was fast-paced, and since everything centered around the charity gala, there’s an endpoint where you know everything will either be resolved or go entirely wrong.

Sometimes I struggle when books have lots of characters, and this one does; however, I feel like all of them are distinct (and have their own set of drama), so it was easy to keep everyone straight in my mind.

This book was fast-paced and so intriguing; I read it pretty quick!

I will also note that this book is the first in a series of four books; however, it seems like each book can stand on its own (from what I understand, the plots don’t rely on reading them in order).

I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for a good book to read before summer is over 🙂
