Building a Life in a New City: My Goals for Living in Buffalo.

When I moved to Buffalo in August, I promised myself I’d treat this move as a chance to build a life — not just find a place to live.

Moving somewhere new as an adult is exciting, of course, but it’s also disorienting. You don’t just have to find your way around a city; you have to find your way into it.

So before I arrived, I set a few simple goals — guideposts to help me stay grounded and intentional as I settled in.

☀️ Get outside every single day

My number one goal has been to get outside every single day — no matter the weather. I arrived in Buffalo on August 6th, and I haven’t missed a day yet.

Sometimes that means a long walk to the waterfront, other days it’s just stepping out to the farmers market or taking a quick loop around the block.

But getting fresh air every day has made a difference — it helps me feel connected to where I am, even on the days I don’t have anywhere to be.

💙 Get involved in the community

When I imagined living here, I knew I wanted to be part of Buffalo, not just an observer.

I’ve already gone to a charity event for the library, and later this week, I’m dropping off my first batch of groceries at a community fridge near my apartment.

Little actions like that remind me how much I love this city’s sense of care and collaboration. It feels good to give back, even in small ways — and it’s also one of the best ways to meet people who share your values.

🍞 Embrace the local culture

To me, embracing the culture means doing as the locals do — eating the popular foods, learning the city’s history, and of course, cheering for the Buffalo Bills.

I’ve been watching every game (Go Bills!) and frequenting a nearby bar where fans gather, which has quickly become one of my favorite Sunday rituals.

There’s also a deli café I stop into once a week for lunch, and a farmers market I haven’t missed yet. Becoming a regular at a few local spots makes the city feel smaller in the best way — familiar, cozy, and full of faces I’m starting to recognize.

🏡 Create a sense of home

Part of what makes a new city feel comfortable is finding your own rhythms.

I’ve been exploring different neighborhoods, figuring out my favorite walking routes, and settling into my apartment.

Slowly but surely, Buffalo is starting to feel like mine — not because I’ve mastered it, but because I’ve started to notice the little things that make it special.

❄️ Embrace the seasons

One of my quiet goals is to not just survive the winter, but to actually enjoy it. Buffalo is known for its snow, and while that might scare some people off, I’m determined to lean into it.

I want to find the cozy parts of cold weather — the cafés with fogged-up windows, the quiet of fresh snow, the feeling of earning that first cup of hot chocolate after walking home in the cold.

✨ Stay open to what’s next

More than anything, I want to stay open — to new routines, new friendships, new parts of myself that come out in this new chapter.

I’ve learned that when you move somewhere new, you can’t always plan who you’ll meet or what you’ll find. But you can decide to stay curious. To keep showing up, keep stepping outside, and keep saying yes.

Buffalo has already started to feel like home — not because everything’s familiar, but because I’m letting it be.
