Over the last few years, I’ve worked up to only washing my hair once per week, or even only every 10 days. If you wash your hair daily, this probably sounds disgusting to you, but I have colored hair… particularly, red hair, which is very difficult to care for.
Every time I wash my hair — even in completely cold water — red dye rinses out and my hair color fades. So, there’s no way I could wash it every day or every other day.
One thing that helps me extend the color is using a scalp scrub. It really helps rinse away any dry shampoo or residue from other hair care products I use throughout the week.
I just keep trying new scrubs to find the best one, and so far, this one is my favorite (it’s the third one I’ve tried)! It’s the IGK Low Key Cleansing Walnut Scalp Scrub. Here’s the product description from the IGK website:
This nutrient-dense, sulfate-free cooling scrub is like a detox in a bottle. IGK Low Key is designed to eliminate impurities, it soothes and purifies your scalp after you’ve over-indulged in heat styling and coloring, locks will look shinier, softer and healthier. Apple cider vinegar clarifies the scalp, while walnut oil helps hydrate and nourish the scalp and hair. Being LOW KEY is anything but basic.
The grit is larger, like the DPHue scrub — think large sea salt crystals — which I find easier to rinse out than sand-sized grit. And cooling, yes! After I finish rinsing my hair, it my scalp feels minty and clean, which is refreshing, especially in the summer months.
I also like that this comes in a squeeze bottle, as opposed to a jar that you have to stick your hand in. If you wanted, you could squeeze the product right into your hair part and start massaging it in.
It doesn’t foam up, but if it’s easier, you can mix it in with your shampoo and work the product into your scalp that way. I have really thick hair, so it’s easier if I get my hair wet first and then use the product.
If you’re reading this today, July 5, it’s actually on sale on the IGK website or, if you’re an Ulta shopper, they are offering 5X the points on all IGK products today — totally worth it either way!
Have you used a scalp scrub? If so, what ones have you tried?
