I know I’m a little late to the game, but I’ve FINALLY started on my summer reading list! I spent a good amount of time curating a seasonal stack (you can see it here), but I got hung up on some library books… but here we are!
The first book I selected from my stack is “Sandwich” by Catherine Newman, and I loved it!
This book follows Rocky, a mom and a wife, on her family’s annual trip to Cape Cod.
The entire book takes place during this week, and although nothing major happens, the trip brings back memories of past trips and offers a glimpse into the family’s dynamics (including Rocky’s relationship with her parents).
While I can’t be certain about this, my interpretation of the title was that during this vacation, Rocky finds herself “sandwiched” between generations (her kids and her parents).
She might also be in an awkward place in her life; she’s not young, but not quite old, and she’s making some decisions about her past while also considering what the future holds.
I found this story so relatable and laugh-out-loud funny!
It does cover some serious topics (pregnancy, abortion, infertility), but it does so in a way I really appreciated.
What’s most surprising is that I knew this book was popular, but I kept going back and forth about whether to read it. I didn’t think it would be for me, but I read it in a single day.
You just never know how you’re going to feel about a book until you check it out for yourself!
It felt like a nice slice of summer life, and it was a really nice escape. I liked the family so much, and I’m really excited to read the sequel, “Wreck,” in the fall.
One final thing I want to note is that I read it outside as part of my personal summer bucket list (you can see my list here). Picking the right setting to read a book can really enhance your experience, and I was happy to find a comfy chair near the canal to read this one!
