As a holiday romance enthusiast, The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer felt like a delightful gift.

This refreshing take on the genre centers around Hanukkah, a holiday that doesn’t often take center stage in festive fiction. The story combines humor, heart, and a heartfelt exploration of identity and faith—while delivering all the joy we expect from a good romance.

The protagonist, Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt, is a character I found immediately endearing. A “nice Jewish girl” with a not-so-secret love for Christmas and a career as a bestselling Christmas romance novelist, Rachel’s double life already had me hooked.

Add in her chronic illness and her publisher’s request for a Hanukkah-themed romance, and the stakes felt as high as they were relatable.

Enter Jacob Greenberg, Rachel’s childhood nemesis-turned-reluctant ally. Their history is fiery, their banter sharp, and watching them navigate the enemies-to-lovers trope was immensely satisfying.

Jacob’s role in organizing the Matzah Ball, a music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, creates the perfect backdrop for their slow-burn romance.

One thing I particularly loved about this book was its focus on Hanukkah. It was fascinating to learn more about Jewish traditions and culture, seamlessly woven into the narrative.

It brought depth and authenticity to the story while celebrating a holiday that doesn’t always get the festive spotlight.

Rachel’s love for holiday rom-coms, including Hallmark movies, added a fun and meta touch to the story. It felt like a wink to readers who share that same love for over-the-top festive cheer. And her appreciation for The Golden Girls made her even more relatable—I couldn’t help but cheer for her throughout the book.

At the end of the book, Jean Meltzer shares why she wrote The Matzah Ball, and it added another layer of meaning to the story. Her goal was to raise awareness about chronic illness, a struggle she also experiences and gave to Rachel.

I found it such a cool and impactful way to educate readers about a cause while wrapping it in the warmth of a holiday romance.

If you’re looking for a unique, heartwarming, and laugh-out-loud holiday read, The Matzah Ball is a fantastic choice. It’s a story about finding inspiration, embracing your identity, and discovering unexpected love—perfect themes for the holiday season.
