Blanche’s Book Club: ‘Reckless Girls’.

I’ve already started reading the books I’ve selected for “fall,” but I read a book entirely beside the pool that deserved some space.

It’s “Reckless Girls” by Rachel Hawkins.

I actually got this book from a little free library last year. I dropped off a stack of books and looked to see if anything might be interesting.

The author’s name sounded familiar, and the book’s description on the back sounded a little… “Yellowjackets” to me (if you know, you know). So I brought it home.

If you’ve heard of Rachel Hawkins, it’s probably because of her popular book, “The Wife Upstairs.” I haven’t read it, but now I want to!

Anyway, back to “Reckless Girls.” Here’s the scoop:

Remote, untamed, and enigmatic—Meroe Island lies in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, shrouded in a dark history of shipwrecks, cannibalism, and whispers of murder. For the daring traveler, it’s the ultimate escape from everything… except the truth.

Six vibrant twentysomethings are about to embark on a dream getaway—one filled with sun-soaked days and nights that pulse with excitement. But as they realize how isolated they are, the island seems to tighten its grip, pulling them into a dangerous spiral of revelations.

When one person vanishes, and another is found dead, the remaining friends are forced to confront the sinister forces lurking beneath this seemingly idyllic paradise—and the chilling question of who, or what, will be next. Reckless Girls will leave you breathless with its island gothic atmosphere, tantalizing suspense, and a fresh twist on an Agatha Christie classic.

This book moves fast, which I liked. As I mentioned, I read it while relaxing by the pool, and at times, I found myself a little jumpy, thinking things in the book were happening in reality! A perfect escape.

What I enjoyed about this the most is that parts of it were based in truth. You’ve probably heard of a story where people were stranded in the wild and… how do they survive? Extreme measures.

The twists this book takes are shocking but also seemed reasonable considering the circumstances. After all, what would you do to survive if you were left to your own devices?

An interesting thought.

If you’ve read any of Rachel Hawkins’ books, I’d love to know what you thought!
