I’m continuing down this road of listening to audiobooks while I work on my diamond painting.
Typically, I prefer listening to nonfiction. I’ve got nothing against fiction, but I find I don’t digest fiction audio as well as when I read it.
After I listened to Britney’s book, I was on the hunt for another celeb memoir and I was delighted to find:
“If You Would’ve Told Me” by John Stamos. I actually had this book on my TBR list, so I immediately checked it out from the Libby app and started listening.
Before listening to this, I really knew nothing about John Stamos. I did watch “Full House” growing up, but other than that, I didn’t pay much attention to him.
I wouldn’t have even thought twice about his book, but I heard an interview he did (I think it was with Andy Cohen) that made me want to read it.
And I’m so glad I did.
The book covers Stamos’ childhood, his entire acting career, personal relationships, addiction, and loss.
Stamos got his start as a teen on “General Hospital,” but although he was a huge success, his father made sure he still kept shifts at the family restaurant, which I thought was hilarious.
From there, he worked on smaller shows until “Full House” came along, which he was not sold on at first. Of course, we now know the show was a hit, with him at the center of it.
Stamos also had a fairly robust career on Broadway, which is where his alcohol addiction took flight. He later shares that he completed a majority of the press tour for “ER” while intoxicated and eventually drove his car down Rodeo Drive under the influence, which resulted in an accident and a trip to rehab.
The book details other difficult times in Stamos’ life, including the loss of his father and the moment he found out about Bob Saget’s passing. Stamos is also a victim of sexual assault and abuse, and he shares stories from his marriage and divorce with Rebecca Romijn.
There are also funny stories, and I particularly loved hearing about his years with The Beach Boys and his collection of Hollywood memorabilia.
I’ve read a lot of celebrity memoirs, and this one is top-tier! It had a great balance of insider information and was also full of thought and heart.
