I hesitated to share this review because I know it’s not my typical industry… But this product has given me peace of mind, and that says a lot!
I figured there might be someone else out there that could use this, so I’m sharing it.
Before I get into the product itself, I’ll explain why I bought it.
I live in an apartment complex in Austin, Texas. I’ve lived here for years, and I haven’t felt unsafe.
I do take basic safety precautions; I keep my doors and vehicle locked and have someone to look after my apartment if I’m out of town.
But I recently saw a news story about another Austin apartment that was “randomly targeted” by a group of men. The men kicked down the front door and were armed.
Ummm… this scared the ever-living shit out of me.
Now, I’m not so naive that I thought a deadbolt was indestructible; I think it was the “randomly targeted” part that really got me. I mean, what if it were my apartment?
In the actual story, the residents of the apartment broke a window and jumped out of it — resulting in all of them ending up in the hospital.
I don’t think I have the strength to break my window if that were to happen… Honestly, I was sitting in my bed reading Tweets and articles about this and totally freaking myself out on a Saturday night.
But, instead of spiraling even further, I immediately purchased a two-pack of the AceMining Upgraded Door Security Bar.
I looked at various products at various price points and read many reviews, and I ended up with this—and I don’t regret it!
Aside from the affordable price and the reviews, the security bar drew me because it would be easy to use (no installation) and wouldn’t damage my rental apartment.
This security bar “jams” the door, giving the lock(s) and doorframe extra leverage. It can also resist 400 pounds of force!
I got the bars the next day, and they took about one minute to put together. They are adjustable to fit your door, window, or sliding glass door.
I installed one on my front door and one on my sliding glass door. I have wood floors, but they can be used on carpets, too.
I tested them out immediately after installing them.
I unlocked my front door and tried to pull it open with all my strength and it didn’t budge! Same with the sliding glass door.
I keep the bars installed all the time. If I have to open the door to run errands or put my trash out, I lock the door and quickly put my bar up right after — it’s so easy!
Now, thank God, nothing has happened… but having the extra enforcement on the doors has helped me sleep better at night.
When I was reading the reviews for this security bar, I saw that people use it for all sorts of reasons — in dorm rooms, and in rental homes (to keep landlords out).
I remembered that my dad actually had a similar product years ago when his house had a basement, and the backdoor was kind of old; the bar reinforced the door, just in case.
I’m so grateful I found these; they’ve given me some peace of mind but also remind me to be aware of my surroundings.
If you have helpful security measures you take, I’d love to hear them!
