It’s Monday again… I feel like I spent a good portion of my weekend having anxiety, which is… great. Ha!
I will say, though, it’s been sunny and pretty nice in Austin, and I’m trying to enjoy it while I can. We get approximately a week of “spring weather” and possibly a few weeks of acceptable “summer weather” before it gets unbearably hot.
The nice weather has got me thinking about spring, summer, and everything that comes with it: bright colors, pool days, music festivals, etc.
With the change of the seasons, I always dig through my makeup stash and change up what I’m wearing. For spring and summer, I’m definitely going to be wearing colored mascara.
I wore colored mascara when I started wearing makeup (I think it was in 5th or 6th grade). I remember having purple, blue, and green mascara and I loved it.
After that, I didn’t think about it for decades, and then I saw some at Walmart on a random stroll down the makeup aisle. I bought red, and later bought a blue mascara from Pacifica (which I just ran out of a few weeks ago).
It’s a fun way to add some color into your makeup routine. You can wear it by itself or on top of your typical black or brown mascara.
Once I had to toss the Pacifica colored mascara, I re-upped my supply with a very unique version: LUSH Naked Mascara in “Ocean” (blue).
LUSH has all sorts of products under its “naked” category, and these are products that have no plastic packaging or no packaging at all, which reduces waste.
In the beauty space, we’re starting to see more products with recyclable packaging, or none at all, such as soaps and shampoo bars.
But mascara? LUSH got creative with this. I’ll explain.
A closer look at LUSH Naked Mascara
Instead of being in a plastic tube, this mascara is a solid product — it looks like a fat crayon with a tunnel inside it.
The Naked Mascara is vegan, made from candelilla wax and acacia gum, which not only colors and lengthens the lashes, but it also conditions them.
LUSH includes three non-plastic mascara wands with the mascara tube, and each wand is shaped differently to offer various lash effects.
To apply the mascara, LUSH suggests getting the mascara wand slightly wet, swirling it inside of the mascara tube, and applying the product to the lash, just as you normally would.
Having tried this method, I’ll tell you how it went for me and how I ended up using it.
How I apply the LUSH Naked Mascara
When I pulled this out to use it the first time, I followed the directions on the box.
Unfortunately, most of the product ended up NOT in the brush bristles — it was all around the core of the brush. I also found it difficult to really swirl the brush around inside the mascara.
I went to my stash and pulled out a pack of spoolies (I have the Real Techniques dual-ended spoolies). Before I go any further, I want to say that I am not an advocate for using single-use, disposable products, as they are bad for the environment.
Even when I bought this pack of spoolies, I vowed to reuse each one until I couldn’t any more, and, pulling out the pack for using this mascara, I’d only used two spoolies over the course of a year.
If you end up liking a product like this, investing in a non-disposable spoolie would be worth it, and would cut back on waste, too.
I used the technique LUSH suggested, just with a different brush, and WOW. I think because the spoolie was fluffy, it really grabbed onto the color and it applied beautifully to my lashes.
I was able to rinse my spoolie after using it — I don’t want the product to dry on the bristles — and it’s like new each time I use it.
I have now used the mascara with and without a (white) lash primer, and it looks nearly identical either way. If you are going to be in a humid climate or typically experience flaking, I say go with a lash primer — I always use one!
This particular shade (Ocean), is a nice, deep blue, and while it is visible, it’s not too bright. From afar, it just looks like black or brown mascara, which I personally like, and I’ll end up wearing it more!
I will say that this mascara is not for a high-glam look. This fits in more with a clean-girl makeup look, which I think is perfect for warmer weather, beach days, outdoor concerts, etc.
Of course, you can wear it however you want, but this mascara isn’t curling or extremely lengthening. It provides some length and volume and accentuates your natural beauty.
I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for clean, eco-friendly options for your makeup bag.
LUSH has all sorts of different eyeliners, and the teal or silver would look so cool with the blue mascara.
The Naked Mascara comes in a few different colors, including pink/red, brown, and black. I think I’ll keep buying the blue, but I also hope they come out with other colors… like green or purple!
Would you try something like this?
