I’m excited to share my latest read or, in this case, listen: “Here For It: Or, How to Save Your Soul in America” by R. Eric Thomas.
Before listening to the audio version of this book, I’d heard SO much about it (all good things) but I was hesitant to check it out because I am not really a fan of essay collections.
I can’t really pinpoint why that is, other than perhaps maybe they’re hard to get into since it’s essays and not one big story? I’m not sure.
But I felt like listening to it would be different; I’ve certainly listened to other essay collections that I enjoyed.
R. Eric Thomas reads the book, and he has a great voice. To make it even better, much of these essays are comedic — even when covering heavy topics — and I loved listening to them!
Thomas is a pop-culture writer (love that), but a majority of these essays are about life, although they do mention specific pop-culture events.
As a southern gay man of color, Thomas has a very interesting view on America, and how to survive in it. I fully enjoyed his take; it made me think and it made me laugh.
The essays cover what it was like growing up in a Christian home and being considered “other,” code-switching in college, going viral online, and covering the 2016 election, among other topics.
I loved this book and I’m so glad I decided to give it a listen. I would recommend this to anyone!
