I’m so happy I finally have some great reads to share with you all here. I just finished the audio version of “Love, Pamela” by Pamela Anderson (it’s read by her, too), and it was fantastic!
I grew up in the 90s, so I was aware of Pamela Anderson, but really only knew her for her role on “Baywatch,” (which I never watched) and her marriage to Tommy Lee.
I can’t say I thought much about Anderson until her son, Brandon, was a star on “The Hills” reboot. Not only did he introduce himself by saying he was Pam and Tommy’s son, but she came to his house at least once during the season and it was a blast from the past.
I know there was a Hulu series on the sex tape debacle, and Brandon created Pam’s approved story, which is on Netflix. I haven’t watched either of them (I am a sensitive watcher if I’m being honest), but when I saw her story was available as a book, I borrowed it from the library immediately.
The book starts with Pamela sharing memories of her childhood on Vancouver Island, where she developed a love for nature. She was discovered in the stands of a football game, and took her first flight to the US to pose for Playboy.
She became an instant icon. Not only was she popular among the Playboy family, but she was a star in many areas of the decade.
The tabloids focused a lot on Pam’s relationship with Tommy, and also her marriage to Kid Rock (which I’d forgotten about).
But the book shares so much more about her life, specifically about her love for France and poetry; she’s certainly a romantic at heart and seems to still be a humble, small-town girl.
When I finished reading the book, I felt bad that I really only knew the parts about Pam that the tabloids featured.
I think we really did women wrong during that time period — the men got away with so much! I think about all of the 90s stars; and those into the early 00s (Britney, Paris…) it was certainly an interesting decade for pop culture.
I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re at all interested in Pamela Anderson or pop culture in general.
