One of the unexpected detours of my recent Van Halen deep dive led me to this book: Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today by Valerie Bertinelli.

When I first started exploring the band’s history, I wasn’t particularly interested in reading about the spouses of rock stars. But the more I learned about Eddie Van Halen, the more I realized that someone who had been married to him for 20 years would have a pretty unique perspective on his life.

That’s how I ended up looking into Valerie Bertinelli’s books — and to my surprise, there are a lot of them. She’s clearly built an entire second career beyond acting, becoming a lifestyle and cooking personality with several memoirs and cookbooks. (If you’ve ever seen her on the Food Network, that probably makes perfect sense.)

I ultimately chose Enough Already, mostly because I was curious how much it would even talk about Eddie or their relationship.

The answer: quite a bit.

The book is written in a diary style, with much of it taking place during 2020 — the year Eddie Van Halen passed away. Throughout the entries, Bertinelli reflects on how they met, their early years of marriage, the challenges they faced, and how they ultimately managed to maintain a loving connection even after their divorce.

What surprised me most while reading (or rather, listening) was just how likable she is.

I listened to the audiobook version, which she narrates herself, and that added so much to the experience. The tone feels intimate and conversational, almost like you’re listening to a friend process big emotions in real time. Some moments are funny, some are reflective, and others are genuinely heartbreaking.

I’ll admit: I cried more than once.

What makes the book work isn’t just the stories about Eddie or life around rock-and-roll fame. It’s how open Bertinelli is about self-doubt, grief, aging, body image, and learning — sometimes very late in life — how to show yourself compassion.

By the end, my biggest takeaway was simple: she seems like someone I would absolutely want to be friends with.

Even if you’re not deep into the Van Halen universe, Enough Already works as a memoir about growth, forgiveness, and letting go of the expectations we place on ourselves.

But if you are curious about Eddie Van Halen’s life from someone who truly knew him, this book offers a perspective that feels honest, warm, and deeply human.

And if you listen to the audiobook? Even better.
