A Review: Original Ullo Wine Purifier.

A few years ago, I wrote about the Üllo Chill Wine Purifier — a tool that quickly became part of my regular wine routine.

Recently, as I’ve been getting back into my “wine game” (and rediscovering how much I love browsing local wine shops and trying new bottles), I decided to add the Original Üllo Wine Purifier to my setup.

Spoiler alert: I don’t think you need both versions — but now that I have them, I use each one differently and genuinely enjoy the flexibility.

Here’s my honest review after a couple of months of regular use.

Why I GOT the Original Üllo Wine Purifier

I’ve been using the Original since mid-December. The main reason I added it to my routine was simple: I realized I didn’t always need the chilling function.

The Chill version lives in my freezer and is slightly larger, which is great when I want to cool down wine quickly.

But a lot of the wines I’m currently drinking — especially whites, rosés, and lighter reds that are already chilled — didn’t need that extra step.

I wanted something smaller and easier to grab for everyday use. Okay, maybe not everyyyyy day, but you get my point 🙂

The Original fit that role perfectly.

What the Üllo Wine Purifier Actually Does

The concept behind Üllo is straightforward: it uses a patented filtration system designed to remove sulfites and reduce histamines from wine while preserving the natural flavors and aromas.

Each filter is intended to purify one standard 750ml bottle, and the device also includes an optional on/off aerator so you can choose whether or not to open up the wine as you pour.

In practical terms, you pour wine through the purifier directly into a glass or carafe. That’s it.

No powders. No drops. No complicated setup.

My Experience Using the Original Üllo

Taste & Aroma

I do notice a difference — subtle, but real. Wines feel slightly more open aromatically, and I suspect that’s partly because the purifier doubles as an aerator when you want it to. Younger wines in particular seem to benefit from the added air.

How I Use It

Most of my wine nights are low-key (just me and a glass after dinner), so I love that the Original sits right over a single glass. But it also works over a carafe or larger container if I’m serving others — which makes it feel flexible without being bulky.

My Current Wine Preferences

This winter, I’ve been revisiting my wine tastes and noticing how much they’ve evolved. I used to gravitate toward heavier red blends and table reds. Now, I’m loving drier wines — Pinot Noir, Gamay, and really anything dry that leans medium- or light-bodied.

Being able to control aeration on the purifier has been helpful when switching between styles.

Original vs. Chill: Do You Need Both?

Honestly? Probably not.

Here’s how I use them now:

  • Üllo Chill: Red wines or bottles that need temperature adjustment. The freezable chiller can drop the temperature by around 10°F quickly.
  • Original Üllo: Wines that are already chilled — rosé, whites, lighter reds, and most everyday pours.

If you only want one:

  • Choose Chill if you frequently need to cool wine quickly.
  • Choose Original if you mainly want purification and aeration in a smaller, simpler design.

Why I Prefer Bottle Filters (Instead of Wand Filters)

One thing I’ve always liked about Üllo is the reusable purifier system with bottle-sized filters. There are single-glass wand-style filters on the market, but I’ve found them wasteful and inconvenient (if you’re drinking at home).

With the Üllo system:

  • I can purify a full bottle at once.
  • I can store any partially-used filters in the fridge for next time.
  • Replacement filters are easy to manage — and there’s even a subscription option if you want to keep them stocked.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Easy to use — just pour through it
  • Optional aeration gives flexibility across wine styles
  • Compact and works on single glasses or carafes
  • Noticeable improvement in aroma and smoothness (for me)
  • Less wasteful than single-use glass filters or wands
  • Dishwasher-safe and travel-friendly design

Cons

  • You’ll need to keep replacement filters on hand
  • The improvement is subtle — not a magic transformation
  • Probably unnecessary if you already own the Chill version and are happy with it

Final Thoughts

The Original Üllo Wine Purifier has quickly become my go-to for everyday wine nights. It’s smaller, easier to grab than the Chill, and works beautifully for wines that are already at the right temperature.

More than anything, it’s helped me enjoy my rediscovered love of wine — browsing local shops, experimenting with new bottles, and appreciating how my tastes have evolved over the years.

Do you need both Üllo versions? No.

But if you’re looking for a simple, compact way to filter and aerate wine — especially if you’re sensitive to sulfites or just want a smoother experience — the Original is a solid addition to your setup.
