As someone who rents an apartment, I’m always conscious of how I can enhance my home’s security without making any permanent modifications.
When I recently planned a vacation, I decided to step up my safety game, knowing I’d be away for several days. Previously, I purchased a door security bar, but this time, I took it further by adding a couple of new products to ensure my peace of mind: smart plugs and a doorframe reinforcement kit.
Here’s what I bought and how it helped make my apartment safer!
Smart Plugs for Timers and Routines
The first product I invested in was a set of GHome Smart Mini Plugs that I connected to my lights and other electronics. I wanted my apartment to look “lived in” while I was gone, which is where the smart plugs came in handy.
These plugs are compatible with both Alexa and Google Home, and setting them up was incredibly easy.
Why I love the Smart Plugs:
- Remote Control: While on vacation, I used the Google Home app to control my lights from anywhere, so it always looked like someone was home.
- Automated Routines: I set up routines for my indoor and outdoor lights to turn on and off at random times, and I even scheduled music to play at specific points. This gave me an extra layer of security.
- Convenience at Home: Even after returning from my trip, the smart plugs have become a go-to for me. Coming home to a well-lit apartment makes me feel safe, especially when it’s dark outside.
Doorframe Reinforcement Kit
Next on my list was securing my apartment’s front door with a Reinforced Door Screw Kit. I had already been using a door security bar (which I love!), but it’s only effective when I’m home.
Since I wouldn’t be around to set it up during my vacation, I decided to reinforce the actual doorframe for added protection.
This kit came with extra-long screws designed to secure the strike plates, deadbolt plates, and hinges, making it much harder for someone to break in by kicking the door.
Why This Kit Works:
- Affordable Security: For just a few dollars, I was able to make a noticeable improvement in the strength of my front door without damaging my rental property.
- Easy Installation: I’m no DIY expert, but I was able to install the screws with a drill in no time. The screws are significantly longer than the ones that came with my door, providing much better reinforcement.
- Kicking Resistance: Now that the screws are burrowed deep into the door frame, it would take a lot more force to break in.
Peace of Mind and Lessons Learned
Thankfully, nothing happened while I was away, and my vacation went smoothly. But after returning, I was reminded why taking these precautions was so important.
The neighborhood has changed a lot since I moved in, and there are often disturbances in the complex. While I can’t control everything, I can certainly make my home safer with simple yet effective products like these.
I highly recommend taking steps to secure your living space, especially if you’re going out of town. These measures gave me much-needed peace of mind, and the smart plugs continue to make life easier every day.
If you’ve tried any similar security products, or have tips of your own, I’d love to hear about them!
