Say it three times fast: Veggie Shack from Shake Shack š
I’m a little late to the game (per usual), but at the beginning of the year, I saw Shake Shack added a veggie burger to their menu (it was added in May of last year), and I put it on my mental “to eat” list.
Before I go into it, I’ll say that when I moved to Austin in 2015, I was SO excited to try places I’d never eaten at, including Shake Shack and In-N-Out. I remember people asking me what my favorite taco in town was, and I would always say… I’m more excited about the burgers!
Now that I’ve lived here for almost 9 years (!), I can confidently say that In-N-Out isn’t that great (do not come at me), and Shake Shack has its moments. I’m a P Terry’s gal (the fries and shakes are so good), and I also love Hop Doddy.
But I’m DOWN to try anywhere offering a legit veggie burger.
Prior to this option, my go-to Shake Shack order was the ‘Shroom Burger. It’s a portabello mushroom (instead of a patty) filled with cheese and deep-fried. This thing is ELITE! Healthy? No, but flavorful, crunchy, and honestly, added points for uniqueness.
Okay, now for the Veggie Shack. The patty isn’t “fake meat”. It’s made from mushrooms, sweet potatoes, carrots, farro, and quinoa. Fantastic!
Then, the patty is topped with American cheese, crispy onions, pickles, and ShackSauce (this is not a vegan sandwich, FYI), and it’s all on a soft potato bun.
I ordered this for pickup, and I will say Shake Shack food is much better when you can get it hot and fresh and eat it right away.
Regardless, the Veggie Shack is DELICIOUS. It’s so flavorful, thanks to the ShackSauce and crispy onions. The actual veggie patty is substantial but doesn’t get in the way of the other flavors.
My only complaint is that it tasted a little salty, but I’m not sure if that’s because I don’t cook with salt at home, so when I eat elsewhere, I’m hyper-aware of sodium.
I ate every bite of it and had some fries, too. I will be ordering this again, and next time, I want to try the non-dairy frozen custard they’ve added to the menu!
Have you tried the Veggie Shack yet?
