My Ebenezer Scrooge Style Guide!

That’s right; it’s my Ebenezer Scrooge Style Guide!

I started thinking about Mr. Scrooge last winter, particularly during the Texas freeze when I lost power for 3-4 days. My apartment was so cold and dark, and I wanted one of those holders Scrooge has for his taper candle as he carries it through his house.

I learned it’s called a chamberstick, and the more I thought about Scrooge, the more I was like, okay, he’s mean and hates Christmas, but he’s got great style!

So, I challenged myself to find Scrooge-inspired winter fashion at ThredUp (the largest online thrift store) to make this effort more eco-friendly and affordable.

So, here are my ideas for Scrooge’s style from head to toe and from day to night. Let’s go:

Black or Grey Victorian Wool Top Hat

As he’s heading to work and walking throughout town, Scrooge is always completing his look with a black wool top hat. I couldn’t find any on ThredUp, but Etsy has a ton of options! There’s a range of styles, colors, and price points to make the hat work best for you. I’d go with a dark color and make sure it’s wool or felt for that same textured look. If you get one with a ribbon near the brim, you could add feathers or a memento to customize it even more!

Black peacoat

Walking the streets of London, Scrooge has to stay bundled up. He wears a capote, which is a French-style wrapped coat with a cape along the back of the shoulders, and sometimes has a hood.

To modernize Scrooge’s style, I’m suggesting a black peacoat. Bonus points if you can find one with a fabulous collar. ThredUp has lots of coats, and you can sort them by color and style. Here’s what’s available when I filtered the search for black peacoats and trenchcoats.

Cozy Red scarf

Mr. Scrooge may hate Christmas, but he looks awfully festive in his warm red scarf! ThredUp has thousands of scarves to choose from; I narrowed the search by selecting “red” as the color (here’s what came up). I personally love the ones with fringe on each end. A black and red plaid would also be great!

Black Loafers

I can only imagine that Scrooge wore freshly polished boots to tie his entire look together, but I’m selecting black loafers to update his look. ThredUp has several options when you search for black flats, but if heels are more your style, lace-up booties would also work!

Sleep dress or sleep shirt

When Ebenezer is awakened by the first ghost in the night, he’s wearing a sleep dress or a sleep shirt. ThredUp doesn’t have much in the way of loungewear, and it’s likely not something you want to thrift.

In these cases, I look to brands that are either eco-friendly or support a cause I care about. My first idea for this clothing item was Skims; they have the best lounge and sleepwear. They have a cotton poplin sleep dress and a silky sleep dress; both of these button up!

Slippers

As he travels throughout the night (and time), Scrooge keeps his tootsies warm with simple slippers that match his sleep shirt. I’m going with a hotel-style slipper for my updated Scrooge style, and, to my surprise, Pottery Barn has a good selection of affordable and sustainably sourced options!

Chamberstick

You’re going to need a brass chamberstick to see as the ghosts make their visits! The item that inspired it all 🙂 Etsy has loads of vintage chambersticks to choose from; I personally like the taller ones with a complete loop handle. Light the way!

Teacup and saucer

There’s a lot of talk about what Mr. Scrooge has for dinner on Christmas Eve since he blames the ghost’s presence on poor digestion. Charles Dickens also has strong opinions about who drinks coffee and who drinks tea. Regardless, you’ll need a Victorian-style teacup and saucer to complete your look! Etsy has a ton to choose from, and some of them are updated with graphics and text.
