I think I subconsciously put off reading “Will Grayson, Will Grayson” by John Green and David Levithan because it was the last published John Green book I hadn’t read!
But now I’ve read it.
“Will Grayson, Will Grayson” follows two high school students who are both named — you guessed it — Will Grayson.
Although they have the same names, they are very different. The first Will Grayson we meet in the story is straight and working through a possible crush he has within his friend group.
His best friend, Tiny, is a hopeless romantic and is trying to make his own theatre production.
I’m not happy—not happy about jane and mr. randall water polo doucheface iv, not happy about tiny abandoning me without so much as a phone call, not happy about my insufficiently fake fake id—but in the dark on lake shore with the car eating up all the sound, there’s something about the numbness in my lips after having kissed her that i want to keep and hold onto, something in that seems pure, that seems like the singular truth.
The second Will Grayson we meet is having an online relationship with someone he hasn’t met in person yet, and is curious about his sexuality.
The two Wills narrate the book equally, and a unique twist of fate puts them in each other’s paths.
Like most John Green books, this one took me back to high school in the best way — and I found myself smiling as I was reading.
Earlier this year, I learned that John Green wouldn’t be writing anymore YA novels, and while that is sad to hear, I understand.
Last year, I listened to his first piece of nonfiction: “The Anthropocene Reviewed” and it was fantastic, so I’m here for whatever he decides to write!
