While I was baking Christmas cookies, I listened to R. Eric Thomas’ second book of essays, “Congratulations, the Best is Over!“
I listened to his debut book of essays over the summer and loved it (my full review is here), so it was an easy decision to listen to the second book.
While the first book of essays covered much of Thomas’ past, including his childhood and coming-of age, this book dives into more recent stories.
Thomas moves back to Baltimore, attends his 20-year high school reunion, faces the art of home-buying, and addresses the pandemic and the 2020 racial injustices, along with the aftermath.
While these are heavier topics, Thomas covers them with his signature wit and comedy, and the entire book is very entertaining.
Just as in the first book, I know I benefitted from hearing Thomas read his stories; he has a comical way of reading his stories that I don’t think would translate as well via print.
I’m so glad I decided to listen to that first book, because now I have a talented author to watch for new material from!
I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for something light and funny.
