I recently shared a review of a heated throw blanket I bought (I’m using it as I type, actually) and explained that I live in an old, drafty apartment – lucky me!
Well, when I bought the heated throw blanket, I also bought myself a heated mattress pad.
I previously had an electric blanket that I kept on my bed in the winter, but it was on its last leg. I don’t think it was working at all last year.
So, when I went to repurchase one, I realized a heated mattress pad may be a better fit for my needs. Here’s what I was thinking:
- It would still warm my bed, just like a blanket would
- I wouldn’t have to change anything about my bedding and could still use my current blanket and comforter
- It would warm the entire bed as opposed to just where the blanket was
- Kitty Blanche would be able to enjoy the heat no matter where she was sleeping on the bed
So, I started searching and quickly picked one that was a good price and had great reviews: the Sunbeam Restful Quilted Electric Heated Mattress Pad.
It has two controllers – one for each side of the bed — and you can choose your heat setting, and the duration. For example, I usually put my heat on level four and keep it on for 4-5 hours.
The person on the other side of the bed can have different settings; in my case, Kitty Blanche sleeps on the other side, so I set hers on level 2 or 3 heat, for 3 hours.
As the weather gets colder, I’m sure I’ll be using the higher heat settings! Bonus: you can keep the blanket on for 1-12 hours.
I got this mattress pad in October, and put it on my bed right away. It wasn’t chilly outside yet, but one thing I didn’t consider until I read the reviews was that the mattress pad could help ease body aches and muscle soreness.
So, for several weeks, I just put it on level 2 or 3 heat before getting into bed, and wow, THAT is a treat. There’s nothing like getting into a warm bed after you take a bath; it definitely helps me fall asleep faster.
As far as the logistics go, I got the queen size, and it fits my bed no problem. I kept an allergen cover on my mattress, and I just put the heated one on top.
The cords for the pad and the controls are a bit much, depending on where you have to plug it in, but I sort of tucked everything into my bed frame so it wouldn’t be visible.
I actually spilled some water in my bed (ugh) and was so worried, but I let it air dry (using my ceiling fan), and everything was fine.
Overall, I love this mattress pad! I plan on keeping it on my bed all year and just adjusting the heat settings as I need.
This is a little bit of a luxury item (it’s not a need), but now that I have it, I can’t imagine being without it.
