Blanche’s Book Club: ‘The Daddy Diaries.’

I mentioned in a previous book review post that I’ve gotten really lucky in my reading life lately and have read some really great books!

The most recent one I read was “The Daddy Diaries: The Year I Grew Up” by Andy Cohen.

I’ve read Andy Cohen’s other diaries, and I loved those, so I was really looking forward to reading this one. I was even able to order an autographed copy for myself 🙂

As the title suggests, the diary takes place in a year, and it’s written in a traditional diary form — Cohen always says these books are modeled after Andy Worhol’s diaries.

But, when I opened the book and saw the first entry was dated January 1, 2022, I smiled so big — it was the day after Cohen famously went on a Bill Deblasio rant on live television. Ha!

Over the course of one year, Cohen details his daily life, which always includes his son, and we get the inside scoop on the birth of his second child.

The book also includes conversations with Andy’s parents, interactions with celebrities inside and outside the Bravo universe, and play-by-plays of Andy’s life as a working parent who’s also famous.

Naturally, I enjoyed the insider’s look at his friendship with John Mayer. As a listener of Cohen’s daily radio show, I also loved hearing parts of stories we didn’t hear on air.

But aside from the kids and the celebrity, what I loved most about the book was Andy’s reflections about New York. He’s lived in Manhattan for decades, and it seems like he falls in love with it more each day.

I made note of this quote:

“I walked down the middle of the street with a blur of Christmas lights and Radio City in my sights, thinking about the millions of New Yorkers who’ve walked down this very street, looking at this same beautiful picture. I felt like I was walking in the footsteps of ghosts, and welled up with an incredible feeling of joy and gratitude. How fortunate to have lived my own life in this glorious city, to get to walk in their footprints but with my own imprint. What a great perspective, to take in the majesty of the city around you with respect for those who came before you and wonderment at those who will come later.”

If you’re a fan of Andy Cohen and/or pop culture, I’d definitely recommend this one!
