Before I left on vacation, I loaded my Nook with vacation-appropriate reads — at least, for me. I like to pick books that don’t take too much of my attention. I don’t want a plot that’s too involved, nor do I want some complex mystery to solve.

Nothing against those books, of course, but I just know that I don’t want to think too hard while on vacation… and there’s a good chance I’ll have a drink in one hand, so there’s that!

Well, “My (Not So) Perfect Life” by Sophie Kinsella was one of the books I added to my Nook before my trip. The other books I added were:

Can you tell I was ready to read? Ha! If you want even more vacation-type reads, my Beach Reading Guide is always available for you! Anyway, let’s get into “My (Not So) Perfect Life”:

This book follows Katie Brenner who has a minor obsession with her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears stylish clothes.

Katie, however, lives in a dismal rental with awkward roommates, all while trying to navigate office politics. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she’s desperate to make her dad proud.

And, just as she’s sort of figuring things out, and develops an office crush… Demeter fires Katie. While she job hunts, Katie retreats to her family’s farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. Things are going well until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest.

Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie’s future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.

This book would make a hilarious movie. There are so many moments that made me laugh as Katie tried to trick and humiliate Demeter in the middle of her vacation, and there’s also a solid B plot with a love-interest. It was the perfect vacation read!

I think I read one Sophie Kinsella book per year, just by coincidence, but I should read more of her books!
